How do you become a psychologist in the United Kingdom?
Take a BPS-accredited psychology degree (or a conversion course) to gain the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, then complete a professional doctorate (clinical, counselling, educational) or a masters plus BPS Stage 2 (forensic, health, occupational, sport), and register with the HCPC to use a protected title.

The short version
- A BPS-accredited psychology degree with a 2:2 or better, or a BPS-accredited conversion course if your degree was in something else. This gives the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). BPS
- Relevant experience, then postgraduate training in one area: a doctorate for clinical, counselling and educational psychology, or a masters plus the BPS Stage 2 qualification for forensic, health, occupational and sport psychology. HCPC
- Register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) before using a protected title such as "clinical psychologist". HCPC
- Renew every two years and keep a record of continuing professional development. HCPC
1. The degree and the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership
The British Psychological Society (BPS) describes the route as an accredited degree or conversion course, then GBC where it is required, then experience, then postgraduate training, then registration. BPS GBC matters because many postgraduate training routes ask for it. BPS
From an accredited degree, GBC needs the accredited award, a 2:2 or better (for students who started after September 2006) and a passed psychology project. BPS If your first degree was not in psychology, or was not accredited, a BPS-accredited conversion course can give GBC instead. BPS
2. Postgraduate training, by title
The HCPC sets the level of training needed to join its register: a professional doctorate for clinical psychologists, a professional doctorate or equivalent for counselling and educational psychologists, and a masters plus the BPS qualification in the field, or equivalent, for forensic, health, occupational and sport and exercise psychologists. HCPC
- Clinical: the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, normally three years full time, with most trainees funded by the NHS. BPS NHS Health Careers counts 30 training programmes in the UK. NHS
- Counselling: a BPS-accredited doctorate, or the BPS Qualification in Counselling Psychology, which usually takes at least three years full time. BPS
- Educational: a BPS-accredited Doctorate in Educational Psychology. BPS
- Forensic: a BPS-accredited MSc, then the BPS Stage 2 qualification, which takes 2 to 4 years. BPS
- Health: a BPS-accredited MSc, then Stage 2, a minimum of two years. BPS
- Occupational: a BPS-accredited MSc, then Stage 2, which takes 2, 3 or 4 years. BPS
Someone who starts NHS-funded training from April 2022 normally cannot start NHS-funded training in a different psychological profession until two years after qualifying. NHS
3. Registration and protected titles
Psychologists are regulated across the UK by the Health and Care Professions Council. It protects nine titles: practitioner psychologist, registered psychologist, and clinical, forensic, counselling, health, educational, occupational, and sport and exercise psychologist. HCPC Using one of these titles without being registered is against the law. "Psychologist" on its own is not a protected title, and neither are counsellor, psychotherapist or therapist. HCPC
For someone trained in the UK, the HCPC charges a one-off scrutiny fee of £86.34 and £246.68 for each two-year registration cycle. New graduates of a UK-approved programme pay half for their first cycle. HCPC
4. After registration: renewal and CPD
Registration is renewed every two years; the next window for practitioner psychologists runs from 1 March to 31 May 2027. HCPC At each renewal the HCPC picks 2.5% of each profession at random for a CPD audit. HCPC
The HCPC sets no required number of hours. Its standards ask you to keep an up-to-date record, do at least two different kinds of learning relevant to your work, and show that it improved your practice and benefited service users. HCPC Supervised practice happens before registration, inside the doctorate or Stage 2.
5. If you trained in Pakistan or elsewhere abroad
Psychologists trained outside the UK apply through the HCPC's international route. HCPC Two assessors compare your training with the HCPC's standards of proficiency, and if they find gaps they look at whether your other training or experience makes up for them. HCPC The outcome is acceptance, a test of competence, or refusal. HCPC guidance
You send certified copies of your identity documents and of the qualification that first let you practise, and a Course Information Form that your university completes, stamps and signs, giving the content, hours and assessment of each part of the course. HCPC Copies must be certified within the last six months, and documents not in English need certified translations. HCPC guidance
- Fee: a non-refundable international scrutiny fee of £678.38, with the registration fee paid separately if you are accepted. HCPC
- Time: the HCPC's web page says a first decision takes 3 months from a complete application; its 2025 guidance says 60 working days. HCPC page HCPC guidance
- English: Pakistan is not on the HCPC's list of English-speaking countries, so you need IELTS at 7.0 overall with no part below 6.5 (or TOEFL iBT or OET), taken within the last two years. HCPC
Neither the HCPC nor the BPS publishes a statement on Pakistani degrees specifically. The UK entry level is a doctorate, or a masters plus Stage 2, so a BS or MS on its own is below it; the assessment is made on your whole training and experience. HCPC To gain GBC with a degree from abroad, the BPS asks for a degree equivalent to a UK bachelor's at 2:2 or better, at least half psychology, with a passed research project. BPS
6. Pay in the NHS
Trainee clinical psychologists are paid on NHS band 6, and qualified clinical psychologists start on band 7. NHS Consultant posts are bands 8c and 8d, and heads of psychology services band 9. BPS The 2026/27 annual scales, from 1 April 2026: band 6 £39,959 to £48,117; band 7 £49,387 to £56,515; band 8a £57,528 to £64,750; band 8c £79,504 to £91,609; band 9 £112,782 to £129,783. What we could not confirm
- How long the university doctorates in educational and counselling psychology take.
- Whether the HCPC or BPS treats a Pakistani BS or MS as equivalent to anything; neither publishes a statement on it.
- The TOEFL minimum scores that apply from 21 January 2026.
- Whether the NHS pay table above applies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as England.
