Copyright and takedowns

How to report material you hold the rights to, and what happens next.

Reporting infringement

  • Send us the exact URL of the item, a description of the work you hold rights in, a statement that you are the rights holder or authorised to act for them, and your contact details.
  • Use the contact form and choose Copyright, or email the address on the contact page.

What happens

  • The item is made unavailable while we look at it, usually within two working days.
  • The uploader is told what was reported and by whom, unless doing so would be unsafe.
  • The uploader can respond with evidence of their right to share it.
  • If the report stands, the item stays down. If the response stands, it is restored.

Counter-notice

  • If your item was removed and you hold the right to share it, reply to the notice with evidence: the licence, the publisher policy, or your agreement.

Repeat infringement

  • Accounts that repeatedly upload material they have no right to share are closed.
